Your Nervous System Affects Longevity As Much As Sleep or Diet
New research links chronic stress dysregulation to a meaningfully higher risk of death, and the practices that calm it down are simple and well tested.
People with high allostatic load, a measure of how much wear and tear chronic stress puts on the body, have a 22% higher risk of dying from any cause. [1]
Their risk of dying specifically from cardiovascular disease is 31% higher. [1]
That comes from a 2022 meta-analysis pooling 17 studies published between 2001 and 2020. [1]
The nervous system carries its own measurable weight in how long you live, separate from what you eat, how you sleep, or how much you exercise.
In this article, you’ll see what allostatic load actually measures, why chronic stress ages the body through a pathway of its own, and which nervous system practices have real trial evidence behind them. That should help you add one practical habit without turning your morning routine into another chore.
How chronic stress wears down the body
Allostatic load is a way of measuring the cumulative cost of stress across several body systems at once: neuroendocrine, immune, metabolic, and cardiovascular. Instead of looking at one marker, like cortisol or blood pressure, researchers combine several into a single index of how dysregulated the body has become.
In the 2022 systematic review, all 17 individual studies found that high allostatic load raised the risk of death from any cause, with hazard ratios ranging from 1.08 to 2.75. [1] When the researchers pooled the strongest studies, the combined figure came out at a 22% higher risk of all-cause mortality and a 31% higher risk of cardiovascular death. [1]
Those numbers held after adjusting for age, smoking, weight, and existing disease. [1] That makes allostatic load a separate, independently modifiable risk factor. The authors flagged it as a promising target for prevention, particularly in younger adults, because it can move in either direction depending on what the nervous system experiences day to day. Individual stress responses still vary with genetics, life circumstances, and existing health conditions, so the size of the effect will differ from person to person.

What actually calms it down
The nervous system has a parasympathetic branch that slows heart rate and lowers stress hormone release when it’s active. Slow, controlled breathing is one of the more direct ways to engage it, and the shift toward more parasympathetic activity is often described as improved vagal tone.
A 2023 randomized controlled trial assigned 100 adults with high blood pressure to either 4 weeks of slow breathing training or a control group. [2] The training group breathed at 10 breaths per minute for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. By the end, they showed lower blood pressure, lower salivary cortisol, and higher heart rate variability than the control group. [2] Of the 100 participants, 71 completed the full study, and all differences were statistically significant.
A separate randomized trial compared three different approaches: vigorous physical activity, guided mindfulness meditation, and heart rate variability biofeedback using slow breathing. [3] Seventy-six adults did 5 weeks of daily home practice in one of the three groups. All three reduced stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, and improved sleep quality and general wellbeing. [3]
That’s a useful finding on its own. Physical activity, mindfulness meditation, and slow-breathing biofeedback all lowered stress by a similar amount in the trial, giving people multiple equally effective starting points depending on what actually fits their week. [3]
What you can do
None of this requires a wellness overhaul.
The trial evidence points to a handful of accessible starting points, and you only need one.
Slow breathing is the most studied and the easiest to start today. In trials, roughly 10 breaths per minute for 20 to 30 minutes measurably lowered blood pressure and cortisol within a month. [2]
If that feels mechanical, a daily walk at a pace that raises your heart rate, or 10 minutes of guided mindfulness meditation, produced comparable stress reduction in a separate trial. [3]
Pick the one you’ll actually do most days. Five weeks is roughly how long the evidence suggests it takes to notice a difference, and none of these approaches performed better than the others when people stuck with them.
Consistency mattered more than which method people chose.

I have used a calming herb called American Skullcap for many years now. I make myself a glass of tea with a tablespoon of it before bed. It works on your benzodiazepine receptors, but much more softly, and it is non-addictive, unlike benzodiazepines.
Also, magnesium glycinate has made a big difference for both of us as well.
So if you have nervous system problems like I do (fibromyalgia, seizures, migraines), I highly recommend them.
Practicing yoga has also helped me immensely, and there are many breathing exercises that are part of it.
Just trying to share some of the things you left out that have worked, at least for me.
Dealing with neurological problems and stress and PTSD has pretty much defined the last decade of my life…
